Micro-Implants For Breast Augmentation

January 29, 2009 · 2 Comments

A Los Angeles-based plastic surgeon has received a patent on a new type of breast implants. Called “micro” implants, they are about the size of a raisin, and instead of one implant per breast, a patient would receive hundreds of these tiny implants.

Research so far has indicated that the majority of women considering breast augmentation would prefer these micro implants to the traditional implants. The purported benefits are smaller incisions, shorter and easier recovery, and a more natural look and feel (at about the same cost to the patient as current methods).

The micro implants are made of a similar silicone material as is currently used in breast enlargement surgery, and are intended to compress together and remain anchored inside the optimal area of the breast. Another potential benefit: a quick outpatient appointment after surgery can allow additional micro-implants to be placed in olrder to further increase the breast size. Increasing size is the number one reason today for breast augmentation revision surgeries, which involve removing the old implant and restructuring scar tissue in a much more complex and invasive procedure.

Don’t get too excited yet, ladies. The micro implants are still in the testing phase, and there has as of yet been no application made for FDA-approval. There is no long-term data showing the safety and effectiveness of these devices, and it could be years before they are ready to come to market.

Make me wonder, though—Does this new test mean that a “raisin test” could one day replace the rice test method of choosing an implant size for breast augmentation?

Facelift on a Budget

January 28, 2009 · 2 Comments

As the economy continues sliding downwards, plastic surgeons are saying, your forehead doesn’t have to. Plastic surgery has definitely seen a change with the economy. Patients are tending to put off more expensive and invasive plastic surgeries like facelift surgery or breast augmentation, and opting for the less expensive and invasive procedures like Botox or chemical peels.

One woman facing her 30th high school reunion went to a facial plastic surgeon to see what options she had for achieving a younger look without breaking the bank. She opted out of facelift and instead received the Botox treatment, which targeted the lines around her eyes, forehead, and mouth. Worried that she could not afford a facelift, and the more permanent results that come with it.

And this has been becoming a recent trend. In a survey from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 59 percent of the respondents said in October that the economy had affected their plans for cosmetic plastic surgery, a jump of 9 percent from March. Among those considering having some work done, 27 percent said they would consider less expensive procedures — such as Botox, chemical peels or hyaluronic acid fillers — a bump of 7 percent from March.

So while people are not willing to give up cosmetic procedures all together, more people are interested in minimally invasive procedures, which not only are the less expensive option, but also assure that they will not have extensive downtime, recovering outside of work. Botox, a neurotoxin that weakens or paralyzes muscles in order to remove wrinkles, lasts for three or four months. Fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra are injected to fill in lines and plump volume loss associated with aging. These fillers last six months to a year.

One plastic surgery procedure that has not seen a significant drop however is rhinoplasty. Obviously there aren’t as many options for a quick fix instead of nose surgery, though there are some.

Minimally invasive procedures have come a long way, even just in the past decade. Now, trained and board-certified plastic surgeons can create a youthful look which lasts longer than ever possible. It is important however, not to overdo it. Though fillers like Restylane last around 6 months to a year, your surgeon can create an optimal regimen for you and your aesthetic needs. Malnutrition a Problem for Many Body Contouring Patients

January 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment

When going for body contouring surgery, it is important to maintain proper nutrition before the procedure. This is especially true for patients who have recently experienced massive weight loss. The reduced calorie intake for these people makes them susceptible to malnutrition issues.

Maintaining proper nutrition reduces the risk of complications, speeds up the healing process, and improves scar quality. Cosmetic surgeons who have been giving their patients supplements containing necessary vitamins and minerals before surgery have noticed a decrease in complications and improved healing after body contouring.

A recent study has documented this result. Doctors compared a control group of body contouring patients who did not receive nutritional supplements prior to surgery with a group of patients who did receive extra nutrients.

Approximately 66% of patients in the control group experienced complications after surgery, while only 19% of patients receiving supplements had similar problems.

Body contouring continues to remain one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in our country, especially among people who have experienced massive weight loss. In 2007, 67,000 body contouring procedures were performed on people who recently underwent massive weight loss.

Since 2004, The Patients Advantage is fast becoming the largest matchmaker of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world and is recognized as a leading information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery – matching over 7,000 people with plastic surgeons in 2008.

Microdermabrasion Before and After Help and Advice

January 21, 2009 · 1 Comment

An immensely important influencing factor in ensuring that your skin will always look young healthy and vibrant is to start a regular skin care plan. In their desperate search for the fountain of eternal youth our scientists have invented all types of skin care products for our skin. Wild and wonderful claims are often made about the mind blowing results from applying it regularly. Unfortunately these claims are more commonly simply false and little or no, real, evidence actually exists. As more of us turn to the Internet in an attempt to find a treatment or product to sustain our good looks, more of us are fooled by this kind of advertising. Sadly microdermabrasion and skin care organizations are often as guilty of this practice as others.

Beginning a regular skin care regime is simply the first step in attaining the targets of vibrant, young and healthy looking skin. Invariably|Unsurprisingly we need to go that little bit further and acquire something that works for us. Not so long ago this meant cosmetic surgery but happily this is no longer the case because microdermabrasion is available.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that is famous for it’s incredible results. Alarmingly many of the microdermabrasion web sites, in their attempts to get folk to use their services and treatments at their spa, aesthetic clinic or beauty salon, display images which are not exactly a true representation of the results gained there. It is, therefore, incredibly important that you take steps to discover the true levels of their skills. One of the easiest and best ways in which to do this is to simply ask for examples of the results which prior patients experienced and also for any recommendations made by such. You should ask family members, colleagues and friends if they have knowledge of their reputation or have been there themselves. If it is true that they have a good reputation then it is highly probable that they also gain good results from microdermabrasion.

If you plan to have some microdermabrasion treatments there is a selection of factors which you should be aware, especially in relation to before or after microdermabrasion. Before your sessions start you will have a consultation with your beautician who will examine your skin and decide upon the most effective pretreatment. For treatments of microdermabrasion it is often the case that you are told that you should use some of their products and incorporate them into your daily skin care regime.

After microdermabrasion treatments you may appear a little reddish in the face. Do not become worried because this is common and it will soon pass. However you should not show your skin to too much sunlight after microdermabrasion as the skin is sensitive and is likely to be damaged.

What is dermabrasion?

January 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

If you’ve had acne and those left scars or your skin has been damaged by sun, there is a procedure which can help remove the damaged part of your skin and leave you with smoother and clearer skin.

The procedure is called demabrasion, and it involves scraping off your skin’s top layer to remove the damaged layer. The length and number of times the procedure has to be done depends on the patient’s condition. Usually it takes more than one session for most patients to achieve the desired result.

The recovery time also depends on how many times the patient had to undergo dermabrasion. The procedure usually causes redness of the skin, the feeling that it’s slightly sunburned, so it’s advisable to avoid exposure to the sun for weeks or until when your surgeon advises you.

Dermabrasion is a great way to achieve the clear, smooth skin you once had if you had been scarred in the face or has a few wrinkles. However, it should be understood that dermabrasion doesn’t treat skin defects, burn marks, moles or birth marks.

Improve Self Confidence To Secure Good Jobs

January 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

In this recession, securing a job is very challenging. There are excess capacity everywhere and nobody is interested in investing. To stand out from the thousands of applicants for a well paying job, you need to project self confidence which sometimes, means going for cosmetic surgery to correct your physical attributes.

My neighbor told me recently that her daughter who has finished her education abroad is yearning for breast reduction. She is upset by her large breasts which have attracted lecherous eye stares and ridicule from her school mates. She was one of those early developers and most probably got her “busty” genes from her mother too.

Her lack of self-confidence in flaunting her assets means loose outdoor attire and she is extremely shy around men. Now her breasts are causing her to have physical problems with her shoulders where the straps cut in and severe back pain.

Fortunately, she has decided to go through with the surgery and has found a great place to have it done.

Breast Reduction Reveals a Shapelier Bust

January 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

In the image conscious culture of modern America, men and women alike are drawn to full perfect breasts. Whether cosmetic or natural, breasts get a lot of attention.

For some women, however, a full bra cup is a full time chore. Of course, most women do want breasts they can be satisfied with. In some cases, the women choose enlargement. But many women elect to have breast reductions and avoid concerns over implants and whether or not her breasts look real.

Other, fuller busted women, choose reduction surgery because their breasts are a problem for physical comfort, active lifestyles or even simply walking and moving around at home.

For these women, reductive surgery is a good option. Whether you want to reduce your cup size or lift sagging breasts, cosmetic surgery can help you meet those goals.

Breast reduction surgery provides many benefits to the women who chose to have the procedure done. Through consultations with your plastic surgeon, you can decide what you would like to gain from the reduction surgery. Each surgery includes a breast lift to eliminate excess skin and repositioning of the areolas and nipples.

The reduction itself involves several incisions that are necessary to remove the unwanted tissue. The surgeon will place three incisions on each breast to perform the reduction and lift procedures.

The first and second cuts will surround your areola and move downwards vertically to the inframammary fold. This is often referred to as a keyhole incision.

The third incision is along your inframammary crease (the fold where the breast meets chest). Scarring will occur here, but proper care and allowing for recovery are important parts of the healing process. Over time, the scars will fade.

As part of the lift procedure, your surgeon will reposition the areolas and nipples to normalize the overall appearance of your breasts. If your areolas and nipples are unattractive or too large, the surgeon will make them smaller to improve their aesthetic look.

One of the risks involved with resizing or repositioning these structures includes changes in nipple sensitivity. Because breast reduction surgery is an operation that only removes tissue, the risks seen with enlargement procedures are not of much concern.

Your doctor will want to monitor your recovery process. Post-operative pain is lessened; though you must be careful to follow all of the directions you are given. Typically, you will need two weeks to recover before returning to work.

Your goals for the reduction surgery should be discussed with your surgeon over the span of several consultations. This allows you to ask any questions you may have as well as guiding you towards reasonable goals and expectations of the surgery.

Most patients are thrilled with their results, seeing the scarring as a fair trade for the comfort that their breast reduction provides. As with any breast surgery, a future condition will be drooping or sagging of the breasts. This is a natural process, due to gravity, and is to be expected even after you have had the reduction surgery.

Motherhood Can Look More Beautiful Than Ever

January 12, 2009 · 1 Comment

The birth of a child is one of the most exciting events in a woman’s life. However, it is often distressing, especially to first-time moms, when their bodies do not spring back into pre-pregnancy shape, often leaving them with sagging breasts, stretched abdomens, and an overall matronly feeling. Motherhood now has a new shape. Thanks to advances in cosmetic surgery, postpartum mothers can now reclaim their bikini bodies faster than ever before.

Many women, although ecstatic about new found motherhood, are riddled with insecurity after childbirth due to excessive weight gain in areas which may not have been troublesome before. Women primarily seek two forms of surgery as post partum “tune-ups” abdominoplasty (commonly referred to as a tummy tuck), and breast enhancement surgery(including breast lift and breast augmentation).

Unlike women who are simply overweight, pregnancy puts a certain strain on the body which cannot always be combated by diet and exercise alone. The midsection of the abdomen can be compared to a girdle, a garment which is composed of an elastic portion which, when stretched, is likely to become one size too big. In the abdominal section, women often lose the desired girdling effect after childbirth, which can occur in varying degrees.

Pregnancy not only weakens the muscles, but stretches out the connective tissue, which for most women will not revert to original form on its own. A tummy tuck not only targets excess skin, but also works to retighten the connective tissue so that the abdominal wall reacts to give the waistline a desirable indentation. Without tightening the connective tissue and exerting a girdling effect on intra-abdominal contents, women cannot achieve their pre-pregnancy appearance.

Breast augmentation and breast lift surgery are suitable solutions for postpartum women who are dissatisfied with the new shape of their breasts. Most women, after having one or more children, start to lose volume in the upper portion of their chest, and get a hollowed appearance in the upper outer quadrant of the breast. Surgeons have also noticed that women begin to show signs of sagging in the lower portion.

The sagging of the breast is referred to as breast ptosis and in such cases, your surgeon perform a mastopexy (breast lift), and often insert an implant in the breast to replace the lost volume. The size of a woman’s breast depends on the volume of tissue in the breast; but the position of the breast depends on tautness within the skin envelope, which retains that volume. If a patient has sufficient volume, the surgeon will lift it, giving the woman a tighter skin envelope, thus making the breast stand high and firm.

Many women begin to feel psychologically affected after childbirth. With a fair amount of weight gain, women may feel undesirable, unmotivated, or even frustrated if they are working out at the gym and still cannot seem to shed those last few pounds. By tightening a woman’s body, a surgeon can improve a woman’s self-esteem and her overall attitude about herself.

What about liposuction? Is it still a viable option for someone who wants to rid himself or herself of unwanted weight? A good candidate for liposuction is someone who is in fairly good shape, relatively close to his or her ideal weight, but wants to trim down localized areas. The person should be physically healthy, psychologically stable with realistic expectations. The fat will not re-accumulate in these areas in the same manner as before and leaves small, if any, scars.

Many patients who come to a surgeon after they have given birth request liposuction. Even though they have returned to their previous weight, many of these women have some resistant areas as a result of the pregnancy. One common place where women retain fat is the outer hips. These patients are ideal because the fat is localized so it is not difficult to suction and sculpt the surrounding area to create the desired contour.

Mini tummy tucks are also for someone who is basically in good shape and may be recommended for patients who are within 10 percent of their ideal body weight. This procedure is less invasive than a full tummy tuck. A mini tummy tuck is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.

The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a large or protruding abdomen and can significantly narrow the waistline. The surgery is ideal for women who have been pregnant and have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal, thereby resulting in “stretch marks”. Most surgeons advise patients not to undergo a tummy tuck until they are done having children. There have been a number of case reports where women have accidentally become pregnant after having had a tummy tuck and deliver the baby successfully.

However, theoretically there are potential problems which can occur. Aesthetically speaking, if a woman becomes pregnant after a tummy tuck, there will be new damage to repair after the delivery. For this reason, surgeons do not advise women to undergo this procedure until they have completed their family.

Breast Implant Incision Options

January 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Once you have decided to get breast implants, you still have some choices to make. One of those is where you want the incision to be made. As you will see, the type of incision and the type of filler you want go hand in hand. Discuss all of these options with your surgeon and make an informed decision. Here are your choices:

1. Transaxillary incision site- The incision is made in the armpit and, once healed, the incision is undetectable and no risk of scarring to the breast. You can choose to have placement of the breast implants over or under the muscle. However, because of the distance at which the surgeon is working, there is a chance that symmetry will be off.

Another issue is you are limited to saline only. Because silicones are pre-filled, they can not be inserted and moved all the way over for placement. Salines are filled once inside the tissue. Something else to consider is that the original incision can not be used for revision surgery.

2. Incframammary incision site – This is made in the crease under the breast and is one of the more common techniques. Symmetry is easy to achieve is because the surgeon places it directly where it needs to go without having to maneuver it behind and through a lot of tissue. You can choose over, under or partial-under muscle placement.

Because of the location of the cut, it is practically undetectable. However, if you decide to increase or lessen the volume, it is possible the old scars will be visible because of raising or lowering the crease. This option is not recommended if you are flat and have little tissue to create a crease.

3. Trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) – This incision is made at the navel. Yes, at your belly button. It is a new technique that is gaining a lot of attention because it doesn’t involve cutting around the breast therefore avoiding scarring there. The scar at the navel is very small and shouldn’t be pronounced. Recovery time is also reported as shorter and less painful.

Again, because there is no cutting of the breast tissue, there is little risk of damaging the nerves in the area. Placement can be above or below the muscle. However, you are limited to salines because of the distance they must travel. The surgeon has to tunnel them through tissue and though rare, may create track marks up to the chest area.

Symmetry is also a difficult task because of the distance. Because it is so new, there are few surgeons performing the procedure. If you want this incision site, make sure you find one with experience.

4. Areola incision site – This is made around the nipple and is also a very common choice. It has a tendency to heal very well and the scar is easily hidden along the edge of the nipple. It is easy to achieve symmetry from this location and you can choose over, under or partial-under muscle placement.

This is also a great choice if you plan to have a breast lift at the same time because a cut must be made around the nipple for the lift as well. If it doesn’t heal properly, the scarring may be quite noticeable and there is a risk of damaging nerves.

If you choose under or partial-under muscle from this location, expect some severe discomfort. The surgeon has to push the muscle and tissue apart for correct placement.

Once you have found a board certified plastic surgeon, discuss all of your options. During your consultation, he/she will evaluate your body type and tissue mass to help determine the best method. Being informed and weighing your options is the best way to get the results you want.

Since 2004, The Patients Advantage is fast becoming the largest matchmaker of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world and is recognized as a leading information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery – matching over 7,000 people with plastic surgeons in 2008.

Triumph Over Unwanted Wrinkles

January 4, 2009 · 3 Comments

It has been said that an ideal cosmetic procedure produces dramatic benefits, has few side effects, and is reversible if results are not optimal. Botulinum toxin, or “Botox,” has not only been an exciting advance in cosmetic treatment; it meets the criteria for an “ideal” cosmetic procedure. Botox has been used by ophthalmologists for many years to correct strabismus, or “lazy eye”. Recently, the use of Botox has exploded due to its dramatic cosmetic improvement in facial expression lines.

Cosmetic physicians have known that the skin furrows that we call wrinkles are due to contraction of the underlying muscle under the skin pulling the skin together to form the wrinkle. Relaxation of the muscle softens the wrinkle and can actually cause it to disappear. Furrows and wrinkles which respond best to Botox are glabellar furrows (the deep wrinkles between the eyebrows), forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. Botox has also been used for laugh lines, neck folds, and chin creases. More recently it has found success in patients who have profuse hand perspiration.

The procedure is simple and can be performed during a routine office visit. Botox is injected in minute quantities into the contracted muscles that cause wrinkles and the results are impressive. The muscles relax and wrinkles improve. Within five to seven days, lines of facial expression are reduced. The effect does wear off within three to six months and then Botox needs to be injected again. Most patients, however, do request additional sessions. Studies appear to show that with continued treatments, there is a greater length of time between injection procedures.

After Botox is injected, it goes to work at blocking the nerves involved in muscle contraction. To allow Botox to do its job, three instructions are recommended. First, it is recommended not to touch the site for two to three hours. Second, the patient is asked to remain upright for two to three hours. Third, the patient is asked to move the muscles injected for two to three hours. This allows Botox to be taken up by the involved muscle and nerves and allow it to block contraction. Frowning for glabellar wrinkles, raising the eyebrows or forehead wrinkles, and squinting for crow’s feet allow Botox to work to maximum advantage.

Because the toxin is injected in such small amounts, the safety profile for this medication is high and side effects are minimal. There may be a slight sting at the injection site in about half of the people undergoing the procedure. There may be a mild bruise at the injection site but this is uncommon. Bruising appears to be more common in those people taking aspirin or blood thinners. There might be a concern about a droopy eyebrow or droopy eyelid. Droopy eyelids occur in about one out of 100 people. It lasts an average of four weeks and then it goes away.

There are really no contraindications to the procedure. In other words, it appears that all people can have the procedure performed. There is even one report of a pregnant Alaskan woman who developed botulism and delivered a normal baby. The same toxin in botulism is used in Botox, except there are higher amounts of the toxin in botulism. This reassures us that Botox is indeed a safe agent. The toxin itself is expensive making the injection procedure somewhat expensive. Cost for the visit, the injection and the toxin may vary between $300 and $600.

Botox is a useful addition to cosmetic rejuvenation. This simple procedure performed in the physician’s office has hardly any recovery time and results occur quickly. It can take ten years off the appearance of facial wrinkles within one week. For certain wrinkles, Botox is the procedure of choice. At times, no other cosmetic procedure can approach Botox results. This makes Botox the safe and reliable choice for many unwanted wrinkles of the face.
